India rejects UN rights office remarks, calls concerns interference in internal affairs
Guwahati, Oct. 11 -- The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has rejected remarks by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the events surrounding protests in New Delhi on October 10, describing the concerns as unwarranted and an unacceptable interference in India's internal affairs.
In a statement issued on October 11, the MEA defended India's handling of the protests, stating that the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to peaceful assembly, supported by democratic institutions, an independent judiciary and a free media.
The ministry, however, emphasised that the right to assemble peacefully remains subject to the maintenance of public order and safety.
