North Lakhimpur, Aug. 18 -- Prominent legal practitioner, social worker, and senior advocate Sirajul Islam Hazarika passed away on Monday night after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 78 years old.

Popularly known as Jewel, Hazarika was a widely respected public figure in North Lakhimpur. At the time of his death, he was actively serving the judiciary as the Public Prosecutor.

Born in 1948 to Anjub Ali Hazarika and Safatun Nisha Hazarika, he completed his matriculation at North Lakhimpur Govt. Higher Secondary School and earned his undergraduate degree from North Lakhimpur College, now North Lakhimpur University. He went on to pursue his law degree from University Law College, Gauhati University.
