Assam: AASAA renews demand for ST status, higher wages for tea workers at Dibrugarh rally
Dibrugarh, July 6 -- Members of the All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a rally in Dibrugarh on Monday, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Adivasi community, higher wages for tea garden workers and land rights.
The protesters marched to the office of the District Commissioner, raising slogans before holding a demonstration and submitting a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Besides seeking ST status, AASAA demanded that the daily wage of tea garden workers be raised to Rs 551 from the current Rs 280. It also sought land pattas for Adivasi families living in tea gardens and rural areas.
An AASAA representative said the demands reflect long-pending concerns of the community.
