India, July 24 -- Thousands of pregnant women and new mothers affected by last month's devastating earthquakes in Venezuela are struggling to access healthcare, nutritious food and safe shelter, raising fears for the wellbeing of both mothers and newborns as humanitarian needs continue to grow.
Maternal care disrupted after twin earthquakes
The twin earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 damaged health facilities, displaced about 21,000 people and severely disrupted maternal and child healthcare services. According to UN estimates, around 36,700 pregnant women have been affected, with nearly 4,000 expected to give birth over the next month, averaging about 130 births each day.
