India, Oct. 8 -- Children in Lebanon are facing the combined effects of conflict, displacement and economic hardship, prompting UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell to call for stronger protection measures and greater priority for children as the country plans its recovery.

Russell visits affected families

Russell concluded a visit to Lebanon on October 2 after travelling to southern Lebanon and Beirut, where she met families displaced by violence. At a collective shelter in Tyre, she met families who had fled their homes, in some cases more than once, including a mother caring for her newborn.

She also met children whose homes and schools have been damaged or destroyed and who remain uncertain about when they can return.
