India, Aug. 31 -- Taiwan's proposed referendum on introducing judicial caning for certain crimes has triggered sharp criticism from Amnesty International, which says the move could further weaken human rights protections and violate international standards against cruel and degrading punishment.
Referendum Moves Forward
Taiwan's Legislative Yuan approved the referendum proposal on August 14, asking voters whether the government should introduce judicial caning as a special criminal punishment. The proposed measure covers offences including sexual assault, child abuse, high-value fraud and aggravated fraud.
