India, Oct. 1 -- At 27, Wafaa is working to clear explosive hazards in Sudan while challenging perceptions about women's roles in humanitarian mine action (HMA), a field where women remain a small minority. Originally from Dilling in South Kordofan, she joined JASMAR in 2021 and is now part of MTT 2.
Choosing a Dangerous Profession
Wafaa's decision to enter HMA was shaped by an incident she witnessed while growing up in South Kordofan. A child collecting scrap metal picked up a grenade and other explosive items and placed them in his pocket. The resulting explosion severely injured him and caused him to lose a hand. The incident became a major reason for Wafaa to pursue mine action.
