India, Sept. 22 -- As AI-focused meetings begin at the United Nations General Assembly, Oxfam International has called for stronger global rules to address the concentration of power, inequality and human rights risks linked to artificial intelligence.
Push for rights-based AI governance
In a statement issued ahead of Digital@UNGA 2026 and other AI meetings at UNGA81, Oxfam International Executive Director Amitabh Behar said AI governance should be effective, enforceable and grounded in human rights. The organisation said regulation should cover the full AI lifecycle, including transparency, accountability, human oversight and mechanisms for remedy when harm occurs.
