India, Aug. 21 -- Italy's offshore migration arrangement with Albania is facing renewed scrutiny after Amnesty International warned that the policy has exposed migrants and asylum seekers to serious human rights risks and should discourage the European Union from expanding similar schemes.
Amnesty Flags Detention Risks
In a briefing published on August 20, Amnesty examined the 2023 Italy-Albania agreement, which created two facilities in Albania operated by Italian authorities. The organisation said hundreds of people have been forcibly transferred there, with some facing barriers to legal assistance. It also documented cases in which conditions contributed to self-harm or attempted suicide.
