India, Oct. 6 -- An unusually destructive summer brought record tornado activity, intense rainfall, flooding, wildfires and prolonged power outages across the Midwest and parts of the US East Coast, leaving vulnerable communities facing lengthy recoveries.

West Virginia hit by extreme rainfall

West Virginia experienced some of the most severe flooding. Parts of the state received up to seven inches of rain within six hours in July, nearly twice the average rainfall for the entire month. The storms triggered flooding, mudslides and tornadoes, forcing thousands from their homes.

Nine tornadoes were recorded between July 21 and 22.

Some homes were swept from their foundations as rapidly rising water overwhelmed communities.
