India, July 22 -- Amnesty International has called on Egyptian authorities to immediately release dozens of people detained over their alleged involvement in an online group linked to the "Gen Z" movement, saying they were arrested solely for peacefully expressing political views and advocating change.

Detentions linked to online political activity

According to Amnesty International, around 60 people have been arrested in recent weeks over their alleged participation in a Discord based online group that discussed political reform and criticised President Abdel Fattah al Sisi's government. The detainees reportedly face charges including joining a terrorist organisation, spreading false information and misusing social media platforms.
