India, Sept. 16 -- Algeria is considering changes to its penal code that could pave the way for executions after more than three decades without carrying out a death sentence, Amnesty International said, warning that the move would mark a major shift in the country's approach to capital punishment.
Proposed Penal Code Changes
On August 30, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructed the justice minister to amend the Penal Code by September 15 to reintroduce the death penalty for people who intentionally start or instigate fires. He also said those sentenced to death would face execution after exhausting their appeals.
