New Delhi, Aug. 24 -- US President Donald Trump has announced plans to sharply increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles, automotive parts and steel, escalating his trade dispute with Canada.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel imported from Canada would rise to 50% from January 1, 2027.

Trump also urged companies to manufacture in the United States, saying products built domestically would face no tariffs.

Trump accused Canada of imposing excessively high tariffs on American farmers and agricultural products, arguing that the trade relationship has disadvantaged the United States.
