New Delhi, Aug. 11 -- US President Donald Trump announced on Monday (August 11) that he is placing the Washington, D.C., police department under federal control and deploying National Guard troops in the capital city in an effort to combat violent crime.

The move comes amid a broader public safety plan that also reportedly includes sending 500 federal law enforcement officers and 100 FBI agents to the city.
