New Delhi, July 30 -- China is bracing for a double blow from nature as Typhoon Co-May Typhoon Co-May made landfall in the Chinese financial hub on Wednesday evening and tsunami alerts spread across the Pacific following a massive earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Nearly 283,000 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas in and around Shanghai as Typhoon Co-May - known locally as Zhu Jie Cao - brings heavy downpours and strong winds.

Authorities sounded alerts, cancelled hundreds of flights, and advised residents to remain indoors as the tropical storm swept through the region, according to news agency Reuters.
