Howard Thurman, born in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1899, was an American theologian, minister, educator, author and civil rights spiritual leader. He studied at Morehouse College and Rochester Theological Seminary, later serving at Morehouse, Spelman, Howard University and Boston University. In 1935, Thurman met Mahatma Gandhi during a delegation visit to India, an encounter that helped shape his understanding of nonviolence and spiritual resistance.
