New Delhi, April 2 -- Hanuman Jayanti, also known as Hanuman Janmotsav, marks the birth of "Pavan Putra" (Son of the Wind) Lord Hanuman. On this day, devotees honour and pray to Lord Hanuman, who remains a symbol of unwavering loyalty to Lord Ram.

Lord Hanuman was born to Anjana, a celestial nymph (apsara) cursed to live on Earth, and Kesari, the King of the Vanaras. He is widely considered the 11th Rudra Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Shiva, born to assist Lord Rama in his battle against the demon king Ravana.

Lord Hanuman is also called Vayuputra, because according to a legend, the Wind God (Vayu Dev) played a pivotal role in delivering the divine power to Anjana's womb

As a child, Hanuman famously mistook the rising sun for a ripe man...
