New Delhi, July 30 -- Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have called the 25 per cent tariff announcement, "plus a penalty," by US President Donald Trump "unfortunate," but have also urged the public to wait for an official statement from the Government of India, noting that Trump often takes a "U-turn".

The American President on Wednesday announced that India would face a 25 per cent tariff on goods exported to the United States from August 1. He also imposed a penalty on India for purchasing "a vast majority of their military equipment" and oil from Russia.

August 1 was the deadline Trump had set for reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries, including India.
