Malda, June 8 -- Political speculation has intensified in Malda amid reports that a no-confidence motion may be brought against the Trinamool Congress-led Malda Zilla Parishad following the recent change in government in West Bengal. The possibility has triggered widespread discussion across the district, from tea stalls to local gathering spots.

The Malda Zilla Parishad comprises 43 seats during the 2023 rural elections. The Trinamool Congress secured a commanding majority by winning 34 seats, while the BJP won four and the Congress secured five. Consequently, the Trinamool formed the board, and Lipika Barman Ghosh was elected Sabhadhipati.

However, political equations appear to be shifting after the 2026 Assembly elections. Lipika Barman Ghosh, who contested the Assembly polls as a Trinamool Congress candidate from Malda, suffered a defeat by more than 50,000 votes to BJP candidate Gopal Chandra Saha.

Since the Assembly election results, reports of changing political loyalties have surfaced in several parts of the state.

According to sources, a section of Trinamool members within the Zilla Parishad is allegedly considering switching sides, which could pave the way for a no-confidence motion against the existing board.

The speculation has fuelled debates about the future of the district's top rural civic body.

Dismissing the reports, Malda District Trinamool Congress president Abdur Rahim Boxi said: "I have no information regarding any no-confidence motion. We have a clear majority in the Zilla Parishad. There are only a few seats held by the CPM and Congress. These rumours are being spread in the market without any basis. A no-confidence motion cannot be brought in this manner."

On the other hand, South Malda District BJP president Ajay Ganguly maintained that his party is not currently accepting new entrants.

"Our party leadership has instructed us not to induct anyone into the party at this moment. Naturally, those who are talking about bringing a no-confidence motion are the ones who can explain what political arithmetic or 'magic' lies behind such a move,"

he said.

While no formal proposal has yet been submitted, the growing rumours have added a fresh layer of intrigue to Malda's political landscape.
