New Delhi, Sept. 22 -- Malda; A woman was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon after resisting an alleged attempt to rape by her neighbour in a village under Mothabari Police Station in Malda. The woman, whose husband is reportedly working in another state, is undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Police have started an investigation based on a written complaint.
According to the woman's family, the incident occurred early in the morning when she was preparing to boil paddy at home. She reportedly went outside to dispose of water when a local man allegedly tried to sexually assault her.
The woman raised an alarm and called her in-laws for help. The accused allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, striking her on the neck and back, before fleeing when family members rushed to the spot.
The injured woman was immediately taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Her family claimed that she required 21 stitches-12 on her neck and nine on her back.
The woman's sister said: "My sister was boiling paddy early in the morning. When she went behind the house to throw water, a local man allegedly tried to rape her. She screamed and called her in-laws for help.
The man then attacked her with a sharp weapon on her neck and back. She received 12 stitches on her neck and nine on her back. We have lodged a written complaint with the police."
Police said the accused has been absconding since the incident. Efforts are underway to trace him.
