Kolkata, Sept. 21 -- An evening movie outing at a crowded multiplex in Kasba took a disturbing turn on Sunday when a woman doctor from Bansdroni was allegedly molested and her companions assaulted by a group of men seated nearby. Six men have been arrested.
The incident unfolded during a movie screening at Acropolis Mall when the group of friends, including the woman and her husband, was allegedly targeted by the men sitting close to them.
According to sources, the accused allegedly subjected the women in the group to a sustained barrage of obscene gestures, sexually explicit comments and indecent remarks.
When the women and their companions protested the harassment, the situation quickly spiralled into violence.
The accused allegedly attacked the group, triggering panic among moviegoers. Multiplex staff intervened and alerted Kasba police, who rushed to the spot.
The situation escalated further when the accused allegedly misbehaved with and argued with the police before being restrained. All six were detained and subsequently arrested at the scene.
The arrested men have been identified as Anand Kumar, Suresh Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Srijan Darbar, Manoj Roy, and Arindam Ghosh.
During interrogation, Darbar allegedly claimed to be a student of Jadavpur University and threatened police officers with dire consequences.
Kasba police have registered a case against all six men under the BNS on charges including assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, words or gestures intended to insult a woman's modesty, wrongful restraint, and voluntarily causing hurt.
