Kolkata, Oct. 2 -- A CPI(M) street meeting demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and protesting against the alleged activities of the BJP-led government was disrupted in North Dum Dum's Birati area on Friday.

According to sources, a group of miscreants allegedly stormed the venue around 6 pm, vandalised the stage, smashed plastic chairs and tore down portraits of Mahatma Gandhi. Several CPI(M) workers, including women, were allegedly assaulted, with one worker reportedly suffering a serious eye injury.

Following the incident, CPI(M) supporters blocked MB Road, alleging police inaction. Senior police officers later intervened, while a large police contingent was deployed in the area.
