India, July 24 -- Amidst the nationwide uproar over exam irregularities, a case of an alleged paper leak has surfaced at Uttarakhand Technical University on Thursday, prompting the opposition Congress to demand the resignation of Minister Dhan Singh Rawat. According to sources, following the incident, semester examinations for two subjects -- 'Machine Learning for Internet of Things' and 'Electromagnetic Field Theory' -- scheduled for the 2025-26 academic session have been cancelled by Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU), Dehradun. They added that the examinations for both subjects will now be reconducted in the third week of August, whose details will be made available to students on the university's website. According to the reports, the decision to cancel and reschedule the exams was based on the findings of the university's high-level inquiry committee -- constituted following a complaint about the 'Machine Learning for Internet of Things' paper leak -- and the report and recommendations of an internal inquiry conducted by Dehradun's 'Shivalik College of Engineering', an institute under scrutiny.
Both the inquiry reports found that Ashish Kumar Gupta, an external teacher -- Assistant Professor at Shivalik College of Engineering and responsible for setting the paper for this subject -- had allegedly shared "similar questions" on the students' internal portal and WhatsApp groups before the exam, the sources said. Furthermore, an investigation revealed a possibility of a similar discrepancy and breach of confidentiality regarding the question paper for another subject, 'Electromagnetic Theory,' which was also prepared by the same teacher, they said. Gupta has been barred from all examination-related duties at the university.
