Ujjain, Nov. 1 -- Four people died allegedly due to suffocation while cleaning a waste chamber at a private hotel in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain late Saturday night, police said on Sunday. Two others who entered the chamber in an attempt to rescue them also fell ill and were hospitalised but were later discharged after receiving treatment.
The incident took place around 11 pm at Shri Ganga Hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas road. According to Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma, four people entered the chamber and became trapped inside. They apparently died due to suffocation.
Police personnel pulled the victims out and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but their efforts were unsuccessful. The four were taken to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The deceased were identified as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin Valmik, Manoj Meena and Wahid.
Ujjain District Magistrate Roshan Kumar Singh said an investigation was underway to establish whether the workers had entered the chamber to clean it or had accidentally fallen inside. Further action would be taken based on the findings. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the deaths and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the victims.
In a post on X, Yadav said the news of the deaths during the cleaning of a chamber at a private hotel was deeply painful. He offered condolences to the bereaved families and said he had directed the state government to provide the compensation.
