Kolkata, Sept. 22 -- A holiday turned into a nightmare at the Mandarmani sea on Monday afternoon, after two tourists, including a 10-year-old child, drowned, and another went missing after being swept away by strong currents.
The incident occurred near the high-risk Mohana area despite strict administrative warnings against entering the turbulent waters. The deceased have been identified as 10-year-old Somnath Haldar from Krishnaganj and 18-year-old Brishti Seal from Shantipur in Nadia district. Brishti's husband, 24-year-old Suman Seal, remains missing as rescue operations concluded on Tuesday.
According to sources, a group of tourists from Nadia had been to Mandarmani for a vacation. Disregarding the red flags and warnings issued due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, several members of the group were bathing in the sea. The local rescue teams, while on their routine patrol along the beach, received information that a massive tidal wave dragged the tourists into the deep waters. Local lifeguards and civic volunteers immediately launched a rescue operation. After a few moments, they managed to pull Haldar out of the water in critical condition, while Brishti was found on the shore. They were rushed to Balisai Rural Hospital, where doctors pronounced them both dead.
