Cooch Behar, Sept. 25 -- A mysterious double death has triggered tension in Chhat Shingimari village under Sitai Police Station in Cooch Behar, where the bodies of a man and his brother-in-law were recovered from a pond on Thursday night. The deceased have been identified as Monirul Mia and Momin Mia, who were reportedly engaged in business together.
According to police and local sources, the two men left for Dinhata on Thursday morning in a local Bhutbhuti (motorised vehicle) carrying tobacco for business purposes. However, they failed to return home and their whereabouts remained unknown throughout the day.
Later that night, the bodies of Monirul and Momin were recovered from a pond located some distance from their residence. After being informed, personnel from Sitai police station reached the spot and recovered the bodies.
Police have already arrested one person in connection with the incident. Investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the possibility of murder and whether others were involved.
Jahanur Mia, Monirul's brother, said: "My brother and his brother-in-law could not be traced after leaving for work. A missing diary was lodged at the police station at around 4pm. During the search, their bodies were recovered at around 9pm."
The police are investigating the motive behind the deaths and whether a larger group was involved in the incident.
