Kolkata, Aug. 30 -- Two Kolkata Police personnel have been suspended, and a civic volunteer demobilised following allegations that they were extorting money from goods vehicles in Bhangar, a senior officer said on Sunday.

All three of them, including a sergeant, have been subjected to departmental proceedings following a preliminary inquiry into the allegations, he said.

According to the officer, the matter came to light after a complaint was received by Kolkata Police from the higher levels of the state government that goods vehicles were allegedly being stopped regularly and money collected from them at Ghatakpukur crossing in Bhangar.

The Bhangar Traffic Police Guard conducted a preliminary inquiry into the complaint and identified Sergeant Nurul Islam Molla, constable Shibnandan Thakur and civic volunteer Ali Hasan Molla as the personnel allegedly involved in the extortion.
