Kolkata, Aug. 30 -- A Trinamool Congress worker arrested in connection with the Camac Street incident was allegedly assaulted in police custody, leaving him with a serious head injury. Toukir Alam is currently undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital and was reportedly unconscious when admitted. The TMC has accused the police of excessive action and custodial torture.
According to TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh, Toukir was arrested by Shakespeare Sarani police on Friday afternoon while returning after offering prayers. He was allegedly taken to the police station and assaulted, with pressure allegedly being exerted on him to give a statement against TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He was later admitted to SSKM Hospital after sustaining a serious head injury.
Following TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee's instructions, Kunal Ghosh, MP Dola Sen, TMC leader Humayun Kabir and lawyer Arka Kumar Nag visited Toukir at the hospital and enquired about his condition.
Ghosh demanded a full and impartial investigation, questioning how a person who was reportedly healthy at the time of arrest could sustain such serious injuries in police custody. He said accountability must be fixed on the concerned police station and its officer-in-charge.
Dola Sen described the incident as an example of "the worst governance", asserting that such alleged excesses cannot continue. "This cannot be continued. People will revolt against it," she said, warning that public resentment would eventually reflect against such actions.
