Kolkata, April 16 -- The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has approached the Election Commission of India seeking a show-cause notice, immediate FIR and strict action against Humayun Kabir, a candidate of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), over alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct and criminal intimidation.

According to the complaint, a video circulating on social media purportedly shows Kabir making derogatory and defamatory remarks against several Trinamool leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee. The party has further alleged that Kabir issued threats of violence, including statements about killing and burying individuals, which it claims amount to criminal intimidation and an attempt to influence voters ahead of the elections.

The TMC argued that such remarks are not only defamatory but also disrupt the level playing field required during elections. It stated that the comments could adversely affect the electorate and create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, thereby undermining democratic norms.

In its submission, the party cited multiple violations of the MCC, including engaging in personal attacks, making unverified allegations and promoting statements offensive to public decency. It also referred to legal provisions related to defamation, criminal intimidation and undue electoral influence.

The Trinamool Congress has urged the Election Commission to take swift and exemplary action, warning that such incidents could vitiate the electoral environment if left unchecked.
