Kolkata, Sept. 2 -- The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is placing renewed emphasis on its younger generation to project the party's voice alongside experienced leaders. The party has appointed five new spokespersons- Upasana Chowdhury, Arnab Banerjee, Priyanka Adhikary, Nayna Banerjee and Anirban Banerjee- drawn from its student, youth, women and IT wings.
On Wednesday, Upasana Chowdhury, Priyanka Adhikary and other young leaders held a press conference, saying they would henceforth regularly meet the media outside the Assembly, following party supremo Mamata Banerjee's direction to make the youth the "new face" of the organisation. The new spokespersons also said they had been entrusted with presenting the party's position and countering opposition attacks with facts and arguments.
The young leaders directed their attack particularly at the rebel TMC leaders, challenging them to step out of social media and face the people directly.
Upasana said the rebels had no acceptance without Mamata Banerjee, asserting that their political standing was derived from the TMC supremo. The appointments follow a special workshop organised by the party to train the new spokespersons in media handling, political debates and presenting the party's position confidently.
Mamata Banerjee, along with senior leaders Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen, addressed the new faces and offered guidance on communicating the party line. In another organisational development, former minister Asit Majumdar has been appointed convener of the TMC's Hooghly-Serampore organisational district.
