Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- Jalil Akhtar, a resident of Islampur in North Dinajpur, was released from jail on Tuesday after a court granted him bail in a case following his alleged detention on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi.
Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam alleged that Akhtar had been in "illegal custody" since June 19 despite being an Indian citizen. Islam said the court found his voter ID, Aadhaar and ration card valid, and questioned why police had not verified the documents before his arrest.
The MP vowed to pursue action against the officers responsible and urged senior police authorities to investigate the alleged harassment and ensure accountability.
