Kolkata, June 8 -- The state STF, in a joint operation with Darjeeling Police, arrested defeated TMC candidate from Falta Assembly Constituency, Jahangir Khan, near the Indo-Nepal border on Sunday afternoon.

He was intercepted around 2:30 pm at Panitanki Bazar, while allegedly attempting to flee to Nepal. He was taken to Phansidewa P.S before being brought to Kolkata later in the day.

Soon after news of his arrest reached Falta, a group of people vandalised the local TMC party office, widely known as Khan's office. Protesters dragged out chairs, tables and other items and threw them onto the street. Men, women and youths gathered outside, raising slogans against Khan. Several youths were seen entering the office premises, pulling down shutters and kicking doors. In the presence of central forces, some entered rooms inside the office and searched for unspecified items. Khan had earlier moved the Calcutta High Court seeking interim protection from arrest, but the plea was rejected. He had been absconding since then.

Multiple FIRs have been registered against Khan, including one alleging tampering with EVMs on polling day.
