Raiganj, Aug. 27 -- A fugitive Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, who had reportedly taken shelter in Nepal following the change of government in the state, was arrested shortly after returning home at Sonapur in North Dinajpur. The arrested person, Mohammad Sayed, is the husband of Rubi Khatun, the Pradhan of the TMC-led board of Sonapur Gram Panchayat.
Acting on information of his return, a large contingent of police raided his house at Sonapur on Wednesday night and arrested him. Following his arrest, he was taken to Chopra Police Station for questioning.
Police alleged that several cases, including cattle theft, vandalism of a vehicle belonging to BJP leader Nisith Pramanik and land-related disputes, were pending against Sayed. The arrest triggered tension in the locality, with a police presence maintained in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Kesab Boral, Inspector-in-Charge of Chopra Police Station, said: "There are several cases against him, including vandalism of cars and land-related issues. He was produced before the court on Thursday.
