Raiganj, May 11 -- Police on Monday arrested Gopal Bhowmik, a TMC leader of Chopra in North Dinajpur district from Panitanki area of Siliguri, near Indo -Nepal border, in connection with three pending criminal cases, including alleged vandalism of a car during the recent elections. The arrest triggered political reactions in the area, though no untoward incident was reported till late evening.

According to police sources, Bhowmik had been absconding after a warrant was issued against him in connection with old cases.

He was recently accused of damaging the car of a BJP leader on April 17, during the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Following the incident, Chopra police intensified efforts to trace him. Police sources revealed that Bhowmik was apprehended from Panitanki near the Indo-Nepal border while allegedly attempting to flee to Nepal to avoid arrest.

Keshab Baral, Inspector-in-Charge of Chopra police station, said: "He was arrested on Monday afternoon. He will be produced before the court on Tuesday."
