Siliguri, May 25 -- Following the change in government in West Bengal, a party office of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kawakhali area under Matigara block was demolished - not by authorities, but by the party itself on Monday.
According to sources, the demolition was carried out after the party received a notice from the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA). The notice reportedly directed the removal of the office within seven days, warning that the SJDA would undertake the demolition if the deadline was not met.
The reason cited for the action was that the party office had been constructed illegally on land belonging to the SJDA. To avoid further administrative action, the party decided to remove the structure on its own before the stipulated deadline expired.
Speaking on the matter, Krishna Sarkar, a TMC leader of Matigara number 1 block said: "The decision was taken after discussions with party workers. Our party stands with the government and supports its actions.
However, there are several other illegal constructions in the area, and the SJDA should take similar action against those structures as well."
Meanwhile, the Biswa Bangla Globe located at Darjeeling More in Siliguri was dismantled and removed by the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Monday. The globe was installed in April 2022 at an expense of Rs 16 lakh by the SMC. However, on Monday morning, a team removed the structure following instructions issued by the current BJP-led state government.
In this regard, Gautam Deb, the Mayor of Siliguri, said: "The globe was located between the four-lane and six-lane roads that are currently under construction. We had no option but to remove the globe for the road construction work. As the globe was constructed in such a way that it could not be relocated."
