Cooch Behar, July 27 -- Ending weeks of speculation, Pampa Roy Barman, the Trinamool Congress-backed chief of Nazirhat-II Gram Panchayat in Dinhata subdivision, resigned from her post on Monday.
Roy Barman submitted her resignation to Dinhata-II Block Development Officer Lahmu Y. Wangdi at the block office in Sahebganj. In her resignation letter, she stated that she was unable to discharge her responsibilities as the gram panchayat head effectively and had therefore decided to step down voluntarily.
She declined to comment further on the reasons behind her resignation. However, BJP Mandal No. 6 Yuva Morcha president Tinku Adhikari, BJP leader Tapan Barman and several party workers were present when she submitted her resignation, triggering political speculation.
When asked whether she had resigned under pressure from the BJP, Roy Barman denied the allegation. "No one has put any pressure on me. I have taken this decision of my own free will," she said.
Reacting to the development, BJP's Dinhata Assembly observer Utpal Das alleged: "Several Trinamool-backed pradhans are resigning one after another to evade
corruption charges. However, no one involved in corruption will be spared."
The resignation is expected to fuel fresh political debate in the Dinhata subdivision.
