Kolkata, Oct. 8 -- Bangladeshi author in exile Taslima Nasrin met BJP MLA Ratna Debnath at Mahajati Sadan on Thursday and witnessed the trauma she suffered following the death of her daughter, Abhaya, through a dance drama based on the rape and murder of the RG Kar doctor.
The performers of the 'Shikal Bhangar Golpo' programme highlighted the brutality of the crime. Though Taslima had never met Abhaya, she got an opportunity to see her through a photograph displayed on the stage. She also expressed solidarity with the BJP MLA's fight for justice for her daughter.
"I am excited to meet Ratna as she is a fighter seeking justice, and I can relate to her struggle as I am also seeking justice. I was thrown out of my country 32 years ago, and I am still waiting to return to my homeland. I have been fighting for women's rights, and here, a doctor was raped and murdered, while her mother is still waiting for justice. She must get justice." Abhaya was raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024. She was pursuing an MD in Pulmonology at the time.
Both Taslima and Ratna received the Uma Samman at the programme. Taslima also recited poems. In the programme, state Industries minister Tapas Roy, along with magician PC Sorcar (Jr) and Swami Kripakarananda, a monk of Ramakrishna Mission, were also present.
