Kolkata, July 8 -- The 47th Durga Puja of Nandanik Club in Contai, East Midnapore, headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, will celebrate the contribution of undivided Midnapore to India's freedom struggle this year.

Suvendu Adhikari is the club's president, his brother Soumendu Adhikari the secretary, while veteran politician Sisir Adhikari is a life member.

The pavilion will portray the lives and sacrifices of eminent freedom fighters, including Sushil Dhara, Birendranath Sasmal, Matangini Hazra, Ajay Mukherjee, Satish Samanta, Khudiram Bose, Pradyot Kumar Bhattacharya and Hemchandra Kanungo, highlighting the region's rich revolutionary legacy. The club will perform its ceremonial Khuti Puja on July 24, coinciding with Ulto Rath.

In a departure from tradition, the club has entrusted the pavilion design to Kolkata-based theme artist Anirban Das. For years, decorators from Contai have been known for executing theme-based Durga Pujas in Kolkata. This year, the trend has been reversed with a Kolkata artist designing a marquee puja in Contai. Das, best known for his acclaimed Kolkata Durga Puja themes, including works for Suruchi Sangha, is originally from undivided Midnapore.
