Kolkata, July 5 -- Two women TMC councillors of the Barasat Municipality have alleged that unidentified miscreants hurled stones and eggs at their homes late on Friday night after they refused to resign from their posts, further escalating political tensions in the civic body.

According to Ward 11 councillor Tannistha Khasnabis and Ward 4 councillor Silpi Das, the attacks were intended to intimidate them into stepping down. They alleged that the incidents took place outside their residences, where stones and eggs were thrown by a group of unidentified people. The councillors have demanded strict action against those responsible.

Police reached the spot after being informed and have started an investigation into the incidents. Officers are examining the allegations and trying to identify those involved. No arrests had been reported till the filing of this report.

The incidents come amid continuing political uncertainty in the Barasat Municipality. A few days ago, the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and six other TMC councillors resigned from their posts, triggering a fresh crisis in the civic body. The developments have fuelled speculation over shifting political equations within the municipality.

The two councillors claimed that they had come under pressure to resign but chose not to do so. They alleged that the attacks on their homes were linked to their decision to remain in office.

The affected councillors have sought police protection and action against the perpetrators. The matter has added to the growing unrest surrounding the municipality following the recent resignations.
