Kolkata, Oct. 28 -- Teachers appointed in the state from now on will not be allowed to participate directly in politics or contest elections, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Wednesday, announcing a proposed change in service rules.
The state Cabinet also approved the creation of 1,199 new posts across various departments, the CM said.
The CM said that a decision regarding beautification of Jagadhatri Puja at Chandernagore was taken along with the Rash Mela at Nadia by the state government under supervision of UDMA minister Agnimitra Paul.
The CM said that the Cabinet also decided to provide Gr D jobs to family members of the victims of Chorbagan and the Cabinet observed silence in memory of the victims. However, the two victims of Bihar will only get financial benefit. The CM also said that there will be additional payments for the farmers under CM Krishak Bandhu which will start on November 5.
Adhikari said teachers recruited through the School Service Commission (SSC) would be barred from contesting elections. The proposed restriction is expected to be incorporated into the SSC recruitment framework, marking a departure from the existing practice that allows recruited teachers to contest elections. The CM said teachers in other states were not permitted to be actively involved in politics, while their counterparts in Bengal had been more involved in politics than teaching, contributing to a decline in teaching quality.
