Kolkata, Nov. 3 -- Spoiled meat, fungus-covered paneer, stale cooked food and dog food stored alongside items meant for human consumption were found during a joint inspection of several hotels in Muchipara, Durgapur. The establishments were fined for violating food safety and hygiene norms.

The inspection was conducted by officials of the Food Safety department, Durgapur Municipal Corporation and the police. During checks of hotel kitchens and storage areas, the team found mouldy chicken, fungus-covered paneer, old spices, stale rice and leftover tarka and chana masala.

Officials also found that several food items stored for prolonged periods without date labels.
