Kolkata, Sept. 16 -- State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Wednesday promised rapid industrial development in Murshidabad's Rejinagar if the party wins the Assembly by-election, saying: "The smoke of industries will fly in the skies of Rejinagar within a year."
He was in Berhampur to accompany BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar, who filed his nomination at the Berhampore District Administrative Building following a rally organised by the party's Berhampore organisational district.
Making a campaign pitch for Sarkar, he said a BJP victory would pave the way for industrialisation in the Constituency within a year. The BJP has fielded Sarkar, its state secretary, in an effort to expand its support in the minority-dominated Rejinagar seat.
Bhattacharya also urged minority voters to prioritise mainstream education over unrecognised madrashas. He said the BJP wanted development rather than an election fought on Hindu-Muslim lines. Bhattacharya said the BJP did not believe in dividing voters into majority and minority groups and maintained that all Bengal residents were equally its people.
He claimed that no riot or major communal trouble had occurred in Bengal since the BJP came to power and accused the previous Trinamool Congress government of failing to prevent violence among minority communities. Bhattacharya also claimed that the BJP government had ended "syndicate raj".
