India, July 20 -- Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood on Sunday launched two initiatives to modernise the Capital's power infrastructure and promote clean energy. He inaugurated a Smart Pad Mounted Substation at Gandhi Nagar and rolled out the "Solarize East" campaign to boost rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Speaking at the event, Sood said the Delhi government had invested Rs 1,427 crore in power sector capital expenditure over the past year to strengthen transmission and distribution networks, build new substations, modernise ageing infrastructure and deploy smart technologies.
Highlighting Delhi's record peak power demand of 8,748 MW this year, he said the city met the highest-ever demand without any major outage, attributing it to better planning and stronger infrastructure. "Our goal is not merely to supply electricity, but to ensure reliable, affordable, smart and green power," he said. The newly inaugurated Smart Pad Mounted Substation occupies nearly 80 per cent less space than conventional substations and is equipped with SCADA technology for real-time monitoring, faster fault detection and improved power reliability, making it suitable for densely populated areas. Sood said the "Solarize East" campaign aims to encourage households to install rooftop solar systems by providing information on subsidies, net metering and installation under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The campaign will initially cover South-East Delhi before being expanded to other BYPL distribution areas.
