Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- The Supreme Court on Monday declined to advance the hearing of a challenge concerning West Bengal's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, despite a request for consideration before the October 6 Assembly bypolls in Rejinagar
and Nandigram.
The matter was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant after the petitioner's counsel pointed out that it had earlier been expected to come up on September 29 but was not included in the cause list. The next listed date was October 5.
The counsel sought an earlier hearing, pointing to the large number of appeals pending against decisions affecting voters' names in the revised rolls. He also submitted that some of those affected were unable to vote in the previous elections.
The Chief Justice, however, said the court would take up the matter on October 5, observing that the constituencies involved were only facing by-elections.
