Siliguri, Sept. 1 -- With prices of essential commodities and fresh vegetables continuing to rise, the administration held a meeting with wholesale and retail traders in Siliguri on Tuesday at the state guest house to discuss measures to control the price hike and prevent additional pressure on consumers.
The meeting focused on the reasons behind the abnormal increase in the prices of essential commodities and vegetables and possible measures to keep market prices under control. Siliguri Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Rana Mukherjee, along with the president of the Siliguri Town Station Traders' Association and several wholesale and retail traders, attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the administration instructed wholesale traders to prepare and display a chart mentioning the prices at which commodities are purchased and sold. Traders have been asked to put up the price charts from September 3. The administration also discussed the need to increase monitoring of market prices.
Rana Mukherjee, DCP (East) said: "The wholesale traders have been clearly instructed that commodities cannot be sold to anyone without a bill. We have also emphasised ensuring that common people can purchase essential commodities at reasonable prices."
Kartik Bal, the president of the Town Station Traders' Association said that traders generally purchase commodities from the Siliguri Regulated Market and sell them at retail prices.
"Preparing and displaying the chart will take some time, but everyone will work in accordance with the law," he said.
