Siliguri, May 14 -- Siliguri Police Commissionerate has taken a major step to curb the narcotics racket in the city by forming a dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force. The special team will focus on dismantling drug networks operating across Siliguri.

"The task force has been formed under the leadership of Police Commissioner Syed Waquar Raza on May 13. The team will work in coordination with the Detective Department (DD) and carry out strict action against illegal narcotics activities in the city," said Rana Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East.

The task force will coordinate with all police stations under the police commissionerate and work towards the goal of making the city drug-free. The team includes officers of inspector rank along with five personnel under the supervision of an Additional Superintendent of Police (SP)-rank officer. Additionally, two officers from each police station have been assigned to maintain coordination with the task force to ensure faster and more effective operations.

Police believe that the formation of the special team will help control the narcotics trade in Siliguri and strengthen efforts to make the city drug-free.

Along with this, the DCP also stated that special naka checking and police drives are being conducted at different locations across the city.

Speaking about post-poll violence, he said: "Siliguri is a very peaceful city. No incidents of post-poll violence have been reported so far. However, we have been maintaining strict vigil with the help of Central forces. At present, seven companies of CAPF personnel are deployed under the Siliguri Police Commissionerate area."
