Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- In a crackdown against corruption, the cops of the state Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) has arrested two persons, including a police officer, on Monday in two different incidents in Howrah and East Midnapore districts.

According to sources, a Sub-Inspector (SI) attached to the Bantra Police Station was arrested red-handed by the West Bengal ACB on bribery charges.

The accused officer, Subrata Sarkar, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a local complainant to settle an ongoing case.

Refusing to pay, the complainant approached the ACB and lodged a formal complaint against the officer.

Acting on the tip-off, a team of ACB officials laid a trap at the police station and the accused was caught red-handed.

He has been taken into custody. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered.

On the other hand, in another operation, ACB officials caught a tout identified as Shahbuddin Mallick from Panskura blood bank in East Midnapore.

He was intercepted by the cops while selling blood obtained illegally from the blood bank. Further investigation to ascertain the role of staff is ongoing.
