Kolkata, June 21 -- The School Education Department has directed schools across West Bengal to create awareness about railway concession facilities available to students and take measures to prevent misuse of school identity cards and concession-related benefits during train travel.
In a memorandum issued to all District Inspectors of Schools (Secondary Education), the Commissioner of School Education asked them to circulate the matter among schools under their jurisdiction and ensure that students and guardians are informed about the concession scheme offered by the railways.
The directive followed a request from Uday Shankar Jha, Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Eastern Railway, who sought the department's assistance in disseminating information about the concession facility meant for educational travel.
According to the memorandum, Eastern Railway has requested educational institutions to sensitise students about availing themselves of the official student concession/pass facility through the prescribed procedure and in accordance with railway rules.
District inspectors have been asked to instruct schools to sensitise students about travelling only with valid railway tickets or passes.
Schools have also been directed to ensure wide publicity of the concession scheme among students and guardians so that eligible beneficiaries can avail themselves of legitimate railway travel benefits.
The department has further asked schools to undertake suitable awareness measures to prevent misuse of school identity cards and lanyards for railway travel.
