New Delhi, Sept. 10 -- A Delhi court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Shubham Tyagi, who operates a paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan, days after seven people, mostly students, were killed when a multi-storey building housing the PG collapsed.
The pre-arrest bail application was rejected by Judicial Magistrate Kautuk Bhardwaj of the Patiala House Court.
The building collapse took place on September 6 in Delhi's Satya Niketan area. Seven people were killed in the incident, with most of the victims being students staying at the paying guest accommodation.
The court's decision comes as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and the responsibility of those associated with the operation of the premises.
Tyagi had approached the court seeking protection from arrest through an anticipatory bail plea. The court, however, declined to grant the relief.
The incident has triggered scrutiny of paying guest accommodations in the capital, particularly over building safety and compliance with regulations. Following the collapse, authorities have stepped up inspections of PG properties in Delhi to identify buildings that may pose safety risks.
The case has also intensified concerns about the safety of students and other residents living in PG accommodations, many of whom depend on such facilities for housing while studying or working in the city.
The collapse and the subsequent legal proceedings have put renewed focus on whether PG operators are complying with building, fire and other safety requirements. The rejection of Tyagi's anticipatory bail means he does not receive protection from arrest in connection with the case at this stage. Further proceedings will depend on the investigation and the action taken by the authorities.
