New Delhi, Oct. 24 -- The Food Safety Department has suspended the licence of a popular dhaba near City Centre in Salt Lake after a surprise inspection on Saturday allegedly found expired dairy products, fungus-covered meat and unhygienic conditions.

Officials said the eatery had previously been fined for food safety violations, but the problems persisted, prompting its closure.

Inspectors found uncovered meat with fungus in a dirty freezer, expired paneer and mawa, heavy dust and poor hygiene. The dhaba will remain shut until the violations are rectified and a compliance report is submitted.

Officials will conduct a fresh inspection before deciding on further action. The department may also impose a higher penalty for repeated violations under applicable rules. The action comes amid intensified food safety inspections at restaurants and sweet shops during the festive season.
